I have spent two winters as a staff photographer, filmmaker and backcountry guide for Niseko Photography, based in Niseko on Japan’s northern island, Hokkaido, famous for it’s consistently incredible snowfall and therefore high volume of epic powder days in winter.
Getting the best action shots possible of the customers was a high priority and same-day turnaround required precise and efficient editing. Shooting was not limited to the snow however, with portraiture, travel, landscape, wedding and family content also being a part of my responsibilities.
Film production also involved shooting with brands such as Finnair to promote Japan as a snowsport destination.
While content was important, safety was more so. The combination of photography, film and guiding (be it resort access, splitboard or snowcat) required multiple skillsets, considerable equipment and a sharp mind to provide clients with the best experience and imagery while keeping them safe.
